We’re pleased to present this 6-day package that will take you through the best of the Andes of Peru. We’ll visit Cusco, the cultural capital of the country, and then we’ll visit the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas before starting a walk on the amazing Lares Route. And what better way to end this itinerary than visiting one of the 7 New Wonders of the World, the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
Our tours are designed to give all visitors a true taste of the Peruvian way of life: beautiful towns that maintain ancient traditions, sacred archaeological sites that keep powerful energy, and exquisite food that seduces even the most demanding palates. All the while in the company of our expert bilingual guides who will help you understand the secrets and mysteries that surround these dazzling places.
Welcome to the imperial Inca city of Cusco! As you touch down and head out of the airport, our (Peru hike) representative will be waiting for you outside to take you straight to your accommodation. Cusco sits at a high altitude (3,400 m / 11,155 ft), so you’ll likely need a bit of time to acclimatize. Spend the morning relaxing in your room and getting used to your surroundings.
After you’ve had some lunch, we’ll pick you up to begin our city tour. This trip starts in the fascinating Qorikancha or Temple of the Sun, which was probably the most important Inca place within the city of Cusco. While you marvel at the place’s exquisite architecture, our guide will share with you a bit of the Incas history.
We’ll continue by heading to the Plaza de Armas, the main square, to visit the Cathedral that holds approximately 300 paintings from the famous Cusqueña School (the tour includes the Cathedral entrance). The Plaza de Armas itself is a beautiful place to sit and immerse yourself in the local atmosphere as you watch the world go by.
Later on, we’ll visit the impressive archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman, which sits at the top of the Cusco Valley and overlooks the city. It’s characterized by colossal rocks that weigh hundreds of tons. Ancient Inca architects cut and polished these giant stones to build zig-zag walls that cover hundreds of meters. Despite the fact that only a small portion of the original site remains, the enormous dimensions of Sacsayhuaman continue to inspire and surprise its visitors.
We’ll continue with a trip to the Qenqo temple, carved from a single stone block. This site has artificial tunnels, one of which forms an amphitheater. The amphitheater’s original purpose has been lost over time, but most experts agree that the area was used to worship the sun, moon, and stars. We’ll also visit Puka Pukara (or Puca Pucara), a site that the Incas used as a military control center.
Our tour ends in Tambomachay. This complex is made up of a combination of finely carved stones and aqueducts to carry water coming from nearby springs. For this reason, Tambomachay is associated with the water cult. In front of this construction, there’s a tower that’s many believe to have served as a guarding post and communication tower.
After your half-day exploring the city, we’ll drop you back off at your accommodation, and you’ll be able to choose somewhere for a delicious dinner before heading to bed in the comfort of your room.
This morning, you’ll enjoy a tasty breakfast in your hotel before we head out on an exciting day trip to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The drive is fascinating, and you’ll be surrounded by stunning scenery all day of rolling hills, green mountains, and the Urubamba River. The first stop on our day trip is Pisac and its archaeological site at 3,440 m / 11,286 ft.
Pisac is famous for its traditional market full of colors and beautiful souvenirs to take home for yourself, friends, or family. Take advantage of your time here to do some shopping at an incredible price. We’ll also visit its impressive archaeological site while enjoying the scenery of the Sacred Valley. Your guide will take you through temples, altars, and houses built centuries ago. The tour’s highlight will be the famous Intihuatana stone – a religious construction used to decipher the winter solstice, one of the most important ritual dates of the Inca Empire.
Note: If you want to spend more time in the market instead of visiting the archaeological site, you can. Just let our guide know so you can determine a meeting place and time together.
Afterward, we’ll continue towards Urubamba, where we’ll enjoy a delicious buffet lunch in an excellent restaurant. Then we’ll head on to Ollantaytambo (2,792 m / 3,792 ft), a beautiful quaint town located in the heart of the Andes. Here, we’ll visit the Sun temple that was built with huge rocks, many of which were elegantly carved to create water fountains, steps, and terraces. The archaeological site stands tall, looking over the main square of the town, and appears very grand.
On our way back to Cusco, we’ll make a final stop at the town of Chinchero (3,762 m / 12,343 ft). In this place, we’ll get the chance to visit a beautiful colonial temple known for its mural painting above the entrance (this temple was built on top of Inca foundations). We’ll also get to see the Inca walls in the town’s plaza. You’ll enjoy a demonstration and see first hand how the native people make their textiles and learn the whole process. If you like, you can buy some of their handmade products and support them.
Finally, we’ll take you back to Cusco for you to enjoy dinner and an early night. We’ll begin our adventure early in the morning, so you need to get a good night’s sleep.
You’ll be setting off on the real adventure today when we collect you from your accommodation early in the morning and take you in our private transport to the starting point of the trek. We’ll drive for around one and a half hours to Huaran in the Sacred Valley at 2,920 m / 9,580 ft. Once we get there, we’ll accommodate our luggage on the horses and begin walking north. The trail ascends slightly while we follow the Cancha Cancha river course toward a community of the same name.
Along the way, you’ll observe expansive farming fields and mysterious forests. The vegetation in the zone means that a wide variety of birds live here – something that Peru is well-known for. The valley is truly awe-inspiring and well worth you getting out your camera and taking some amazing photos. We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch halfway through this hike.
In the afternoon, we’ll pass through the Cancha Cancha village (3,950 m / 12,959 ft) and make our way to our cozy camp. After hiking a total of around 7 hours today, we’ll get to our campsite in Acopata (4,200 m / 13,780 ft). You’ll be able to unwind and enjoy a tasty dinner made by our chefs before settling in for the night.
We’ll enjoy a nourishing breakfast to give us the energy we need for the day before we begin our ascent to the highest point of the whole trek, Pachacutec Pass (4,700 m / 15,420 ft). We’ll take things slowly and get there after two-and-a-half hours of hiking. The views from this height are stunning, and you’ll spot the snowy peaks of Sahuasiray and Chicon sacred mountains right in front of you.
After enjoying the scenery and resting our legs, we’ll head downhill for two hours to the beautiful lunch spot by Qoyalay Lake (4,140 m / 13,583 ft). Once we’re full and rested, we’ll descend for another hour and a half toward the valley. On this stretch, you’ll see several astounding glacial lakes and herds of alpaca, llamas, and sheep calmly grazing. If you’re lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of deer, vizcachas, geese, hawks, and the immense Andean condor, the largest flying bird in the world.
We’ll get to our camp in the Quiswarani community (3,850 m / 12,631 ft). This is a quaint little place with typical houses built from stone. You’ll enjoy another tasty dinner before heading to bed for the night.
You’re in for a treat today after some hiking this morning. After breakfast, we’ll set out on a 2-hour ascent to Willkikasa (4,400 m / 14,436 ft), the second-highest point of the trip. You’re bound to be impressed by an expansive view of the Andean mountain range, beautiful green lakes, and adjoining valley.
Later on, we’ll begin our descent to the Cuncani community (3,800 m / 12,467 ft) and then continue for another 2 hours to the Lares Hot Springs. It’s here that you can treat your body to some wonderful rest and relaxation in the medicinal hot baths after days of hiking. We’ll also enjoy our lunch here before we continue on our way.
This afternoon, we’ll enjoy a relaxing ride through the mountains in our private transport to the quaint town of Ollantaytambo (2,792 m / 9,160 ft) that you visited on your Sacred Valley tour. We’ll be driving for about 3 hours until we reach the town for a nice dinner and rest in a hotel.
The final and most exciting day of your trip is finally here! You’ll be heading up to Machu Picchu today!
We’ll start with an energizing breakfast at your hotel before we head to the train station to board the 6:45 am train to Aguas Calientes. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful mountains and the Urubamba River. Once we get to the small town, we’ll catch the bus that takes us to the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
Inside the mystical Lost City of the Incas, you’ll enjoy a 2-hour guided tour of the most important places, and your guide will tell you all about the history of this New Wonder of the World.
Afterward, you’ll have more time to explore the site yourself, or you can hike up one of the extra mountains, Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, if you have tickets booked in advance. If not, you can hike up to the Inca Bridge or Sun Gate, from where you’ll also get an amazing panoramic view of the Inca fortress.
A little later, it’ll be time to make our way back down to Aguas Calientes. You’ll have some time to grab lunch in a restaurant of your choice before boarding the Expedition train heading to Ollantaytambo. From there, our private transport will take you back to your accommodation in Cusco. You’ll be able to enjoy dinner and finally put your feet up after days of trekking. We’re sure you’ll remember this incredible adventure for a lifetime!
All information meetings are held in your hotel at 6:00 p.m., one night before the tour begins. If you cannot attend, you must coordinate another time at the Peru Hike offices. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes and there you will be given a small duffel bag, in which you’ll put all the belongings you intend to bring on the trek that won’t be in your day pack.
ou’ll receive a canvas case or duffel bag during your briefing. The porters will take them on the way and will deliver them to you when you get to each camp. They measure 66 cm / 2 ft. Long x 36 cm / 1 ft. Wide.
A maximum of 5 kg is allowed for each duffel bag that includes the weight of your sleeping bag, mat, clothes and other personal items.
The trek has to be paid for in full by at least 7.30 pm two days before departure. For example, if your tour departs on a Wednesday, then you must come to our office before 7.30 pm on Monday.
It would be much appreciated if you pay the trek balance in cash US dollars or local currency. You can withdraw some money from several ATMs along Avenida Sol (either in US dollars or local Peruvian Soles). You can pay by credit card or PAYPAL online, but you will have to pay an 8% service charge, charged by VISA and PAYPAL. We do not accept bank checks or payment of the balance by traveler’s checks.
Of course! During the travel, your main luggage can be stored at our office(you can organize briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.
Any equipment that you are not going to need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (In the unlikely case of theft many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing all the items). Best put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.
Peru Hike can pick you up from your hotel, as long as it’s in the Historic Center of Cusco. The pickup time will be coordinated with your guide in the briefing. The pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic. Cusco is a very old city, therefore, it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.
Returning from Machu Picchu requires quite a bit of logistics, but don’t worry. Everything is included in your tour!
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if said modifications can be made.
Strikes and demonstrations are usually frequent in Peru and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your excursion as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be cancelled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority and our decisions will be made to protect it.
You’re responsible for your objects during the tour. Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our trucks, tents, or restaurants.
Here are some other options that will suit your needs
We enjoyed every second of the Lares trek! Our guide, JC, made an excellent job! The scenery was stunning and we learned a lot about Inca history and culture. Our camp sites were small mountain villages where we got to meet local people. Our chef, George, served us delisious peruvian food and we were never hungry! The horseman also did a great job, we are very happy with the service that the whole crew provided. The last day we explored Machu Picchu which was amazing!
Thank you bambaexperience! we would definitely recommend this trek!
