You want to see the stunning colors from the rainbow mountain, but the long hike up Vinicunca scares you? There is a little-known but great alternative. If the hike up Vinicunca is challenging as it is going up a lot, is long, and the altitude can cause problems to some people, the way from Palcoyo is easier, shorter and mostly flat. Moreover, as Palcoyo is a new route, you will also most likely be alone with your group or with a few other groups. Your pictures will then be better, and you will also see three rainbow mountains instead of just one with the classic tour to Vinicunca. This tour is a must-do in the area.
Explore the beautiful colorful hills similar to the famous rainbow mountain, in this circuit see 3 rainbow mountains with a circuit that will take you to the stone forest, where you can also enjoy the magnificent views of the red valley, surrounded by alpacas and beautiful landscapes that color this beautiful place on top of the high mountains of palcoyo.
The adventure begins around 4 am when we pick you up from your hotel in our private transportation. You will travel for two hours to the village of Checacupe, where you will stop to visit its iconic bridges from three different eras: the Inca hanging bridge, the colonial, and the republican. The town is also famous for its church and for being the place where the hero Tupac Amaru II was defeated in an endless struggle for independence.
After an hour and a half, you will arrive at the small village of Palcoyo and follow the last stretch to the starting point of the hike; from here, you will have the first views of the main mountain. You’ll walk at your own pace for about 50 minutes to the Palcoyo viewpoint, appreciating some alpacas grazing in the distance, being greeted by some of the locals accompanied by lovely alpacas, often adorned in the ears or heads as a token of affection.
Reaching the viewpoint, the Palcoyo mountains will dazzle you immediately, as you’ll also find the other two colored hills that compose this attraction. From here, you will have time to appreciate the wonderful scenery and contemplate the imposing Ausangate (6,372 m / 20,900 ft). You will even be able to appreciate part of the Red Valley, whose sediments form the Blood River. Then, you’ll walk to the rock forest to take an incredible photo observing a geological sample product of millions of years of thawing. On the way back, we’ll share an open-air meal with the amazing mountain backdrop and finish with the drive back to your hotel in Cusco.
We want to make your trip to Peru as memorable and as easy as possible. In this section, you will find speedy answers to all those questions you had about Palcoyo Trek in one place. Please read the following information carefully – it will help you with any questions about our services.

Of course! During the travel, your main luggage can be stored at our office(you can organize briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.
Any equipment that you are not going to need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (In the unlikely case of theft many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing all the items). Best put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.
Peru Hike Company can pick you up from your hotel, as long as it’s in the Historic Center of Cusco. The pickup time will be coordinated with your guide in the briefing. The pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic. Cusco is a very old city, therefore, it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if said modifications can be made.
Strikes and demonstrations are usually frequent in Peru and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your excursion as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be cancelled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority and our decisions will be made to protect it.
You’re responsible for your objects during the tour. Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our trucks, tents, or restaurants.

Phenomenal. So glad I booked this. Such a beautiful place the pictures could never do justice. The meals during the day were fantastic. And I met great people as well!! Disclaimer the bus ride is brutal if you experience any road sickness, it is a very long windy bumpy ride. But if you can tough that out the views are worth it!
Jacob drove safely during the trip and it was super smooth. The tour itself is super interesting, you can see the people and animals that live in the area. And when you get to the top, it’s a bit tiring to walk, but the view is pretty cool. The food was simple and average. We left something in the van and they were super helpful to give us back.
This experience was beyond amazing. Keep in mind there is a 3-3.5 hr drive from Cusco, but it gives you an opportunity to see villages and how the local people live. The mountain itself was breath-taking. It was an easy hike, but keep in mind the high altitude might make it a bit harder to breath. My husband started to feel sick towards the end of the hike and luckily our driver had oxygen. I highly recommend this experience if you are looking to venture. It’s worth it!!!
One of the best trips we took while in Peru! Huge bang for your buck and so nice having everything organized for you so all you need to do is be present. The hike is at around 5000 meters so it was a bit of a hard start but our guide Jacob was super supportive and had extra resources in case you need it.
We absolutely loved this journey. Jacob was an amazing tour guide. I needed some oxygen due to altitude and I was so thankful that Jacob had some on hand. Jacob was kind & accomodating. We were provided two meals. The entire experience was wonderful! It was one of our favorite excursions in Peru. It is a must see!
